Prevention of nitrate tolerance with angiotension converting enzyme inhibitors.

BACKGROUND Activation of neurohumoral hormones or sulfhydryl group depletion may contribute to the development of nitroglycerin tolerance. In an attempt to prevent nitrate tolerance, this study evaluated the interaction of nitroglycerin with angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors with and without a sulfhydryl group. METHODS AND RESULTS Thirty-four subjects were randomized to a 7-day r...

[Prostaglandins and leukotrienes].

Two classes of arachidonic acid derivatives can be formed by two distinct enzyme systems. Cyclo-oxygenases synthesise prostaglandins, prostacyclin and thromboxane A2 which all possess both pro- and anti-inflammatory properties. Lipoxygenases synthesise on the one hand chemotactic factors, the hydroxylated derivatives of arachidonic acid, the most powerful of which is leukotriene B4, and on the ...

Renal vasodilation by converting enzyme inhibition. Role of renal prostaglandins.

The present study was designed to determine whether renal prostaglandins are involved in the renal vasodilation evoked by angiotensin II inhibition in sodium depletion. The converting enzyme inhibitor (CEI) captopril was administered to sodium-depleted control dogs and sodiumdepleted dogs that had previously received the inhibitors of prostaglandin synthesis, indomethacin or meclofenamate. CEI ...

Production of prostaglandins and leukotrienes by pathogenic fungi.

These studies demonstrate that pathogenic fungi (dermatophytic, subcutaneous, and systemic) have the ability to produce eicosanoids both from simple metabolites and from arachidonic acid. Host-derived eicosanoids have been previously demonstrated to enhance fungal colonization and atopic disease development. Thus, fungus-derived eicosanoids represent a potential class of novel virulence factors.

Prostaglandins Leukotrienes and Essential Fatty Acids

The incorporation of (n-3) versus (n-6) fatty acids into membrane lipids is regulated by a number of different processes within the cell. It is generally accepted that a common 6-desaturase uses both linoleate and linolenate as substrates. Desaturation of linoleate and linolenate are generally considered to be the rate limiting steps in the biosynthesis of arachidonate and 20:5(n-3) respectivel...
